‘Smoking, Drinking Don’t Boost Creativity’ – Veteran Musician, Bright Chimezie

A Nigerian legendary highlife musician, Bright Chimezie, has spoken out against a popular belief among some young artists that smoking and drinking alcohol can enhance creativity.

Chimezie, who has carved a niche for himself with timeless hits like Because of English and an unmistakable stage presence, described such claims as misleading and dangerous for aspiring creatives.

Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativTea Podcast, the veteran entertainer emphasized that true creativity is a gift that flows from within and cannot be manufactured by artificial stimulants.

The claims that you need to drink or smoke to get music inspiration is false. If you are drinking or smoking, you are just having fun. That doesn’t mean it will boost your creativity,” he stated firmly.

According to him, music inspiration is natural, often springing from life experiences, observation, and genuine passion for the craft. He cautioned young artists not to mistake reckless indulgence for artistic depth, stressing that great music stands the test of time when it is built on talent, discipline, and originality.

Bright Chimezie urged creatives to embrace a healthy lifestyle, cultivate their natural gifts, and rely on hard work, perseverance, and divine inspiration rather than harmful habits.

You don’t need drugs or alcohol to be creative. What you truly need is a clear mind, discipline, and a heart that connects with your art and your audience,” he added.

Chimezie’s words serve as a timely reminder in today’s entertainment space where peer pressure and misconceptions often push young talents toward destructive choices. His message echoes a broader truth: creativity thrives not in intoxication, but in clarity, dedication, and authenticity.
