CITN, PSIRS Commemorate 2026 National Tax Awareness Day with Public Sensitisation Campaign in Jos
The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Jos and District Society, in collaboration with the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), on Thursday, June 25, 2026, commemorated the 2026 National Tax Awareness Day with a series of activities aimed at promoting tax education, voluntary compliance, and national development.
The event, themed “Tax Awareness for National Growth, Reform, Compliance and Prosperity,” brought together tax professionals, revenue administrators, and key stakeholders in the taxation sector.
Speaking during the event, the Chairman of CITN Jos and District Society, Mr. Reuben Dadar, FCTI (NRS), said the campaign was designed to educate citizens and business owners on the importance of taxation as a critical driver of national growth and sustainable development. He stressed the need for taxpayers to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN), describing it as an essential requirement for effective tax administration and compliance.
The celebration commenced on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, with a radio sensitisation programme facilitated by Mr. Yunana Arin, FCTI (NRS), and Mr. Paul Arin, FCTI. During the programme, the facilitators enlightened listeners on the benefits of tax compliance, taxpayers’ obligations, and the role of taxation in national development.
Activities continued on Thursday with a road walk that began at 8:00 a.m. Participants moved from Secretariat Bridge to Old Airport Roundabout, proceeded to Terminus Metro Bus Station, and concluded the exercise at Old Bukuru Park.
To further deepen public engagement, tax clinics were established at Old Airport Roundabout, Terminus Metro Bus Station, and Old Bukuru Park. The clinics provided members of the public and business owners with information on tax registration, Tax Identification Numbers, compliance procedures, and other tax-related matters.
Also addressing participants, Mrs. Emily Daboer, FCTI, Coordinating Director, Revenue Operations Group, PSIRS, underscored the importance of tax payment in supporting government development programmes and the delivery of essential public services.
Similarly, Mrs. Afiniki Walbe, Director, Board of Internal Revenue, encouraged residents and business owners to fulfill their tax obligations, noting that tax revenue provides government with the resources needed to execute projects that improve citizens’ welfare and quality of life.
In her remarks, Mrs. Rhoda Aki of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) urged business owners not to view taxation with fear or suspicion. She dispelled common misconceptions about the tax system, explaining that banks do not arbitrarily deduct funds from customers’ accounts without due process, and encouraged voluntary tax compliance.
The awareness campaign attracted significant public interest, with traders, transport operators, and other residents engaging tax professionals on various taxation issues.
One of the highlights of the event was the colourful turnout of participants, who wore ash-coloured T-shirts paired with black jeans. Their coordinated appearance, accompanied by music and lively dance performances, created an exciting atmosphere that drew the attention of passersby and enhanced public participation throughout the sensitisation campaign.
The 2026 National Tax Awareness Day celebration reinforced the importance of tax compliance as a catalyst for national growth, economic reform, prosperity, and sustainable development, while reaffirming the commitment of CITN and PSIRS to promoting a culture of voluntary tax compliance among Nigerians.
