Dr. Benjamin Sumi Garkuwa Receives an Award of Excellence in Healthcare and Gospel Music Promotion

The commitment to healing extends beyond the hospital walls, and for Dr. Benjamin Sumi Garkuwa, Chief Medical Director of the Plateau State Hospitals Management Board, encompasses both the care of the body and the nourishment of the soul.

It was against this backdrop that Dr. Benjamin Sumi Garkuwa was honoured with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine, patient care delivery and his unwavering passion for the promotion of the arts, particularly gospel music. The award also acknowledged his belief in the transformative power of music to inspire, encourage and bring healing to lives.

The recognition was presented at the COCIN Headquarters Church during the dedication of a cassette recording by the Angelic Voices Inter-denominational Music Group, founded by Mrs. Suzan H. Zachariah Makwin.

For Dr. Garkuwa, the recognition represents more than a personal honour. It reflects a long-standing commitment to initiatives that promote hope, spiritual encouragement and the positive impact of gospel music in society.

Indeed, for some months now, Dr. Garkuwa is the one sponsoring the gospel music programme “Food for the Soul” on PRTV, using the platform to promote Christian music and its message of faith, hope and encouragement. His support is rooted in his conviction that gospel music can minister to the whole person, providing spiritual comfort, emotional strength and renewed hope, particularly in moments of difficulty and distress.

Speaking after receiving the award, Dr. Sumi expressed appreciation to the Angelic Voices Inter-denominational Music Group for considering him worthy of the recognition. He described the honour as an encouragement to do more, particularly in supporting gospel artists and promoting songs that edify lives and advance the message of faith.

He further reaffirmed his commitment to initiatives that use music and other creative expressions to inspire positive values and strengthen the spiritual wellbeing of individuals and communities. He donated handsomely.

Meanwhile, speaking during the dedication ceremony, the guest preacher, Rev. Stephen Gyang of RCC Du, who represented Rev. Sylvester Dachomo, ministered on the theme “More Anointing,” drawn from 2 Kings 2:9–20.

Rev. Gyang explained that seeking “more anointing” goes beyond a desire for spiritual power; rather, it demands a deeper desire for God and a life that reflects His character. According to him, greater anointing must be accompanied by a clean and dedicated life, greater service to God and the production of fruits that positively impact others.

In the same spirit, Rev. Agom Magaji dedicated the song and cassette to the glory of God, committing the work to God’s purpose and seeking divine blessing upon its message and impact.

Also, Mrs. Deborah Mozo offered a special prayer for the Angelic Voices Inter-denominational Music Group, praying for God’s continued guidance, strength and anointing upon the members. She also prayed that the cassette would fulfil the purpose for which it was produced and become a source of spiritual blessing, encouragement and transformation to all who listen to it.

The honour bestowed on Dr. Benjamin Sumi Garkuwa therefore underscores a broader dimension of his leadership—one that recognises that meaningful service to humanity is not limited to professional responsibilities. Through medicine, patient care and his support for gospel music, Dr. Garkuwa continues to demonstrate a commitment to healing, hope and the wellbeing of the whole person.
